Is my Toyota Auris's engine a little noisy?

I have a Toyota Auris T180 which performs with smoothness and lots of energy. However I think the diesel engine is noisy when idling. The basic sound is smooth and even, but is overlaid with a rhythmic 'metallic chatter' which cuts in and out. A friend suggested the high pressure fuel injection system will always sound like that but I wondered if it might be the timing chain. The mileage is 22,000.

How often are you changing the oil? I've never heard of a timing chain problem with this engine but there have been instances of cylinder head problems. You've got a good car. Nice, punchy, long legged performance with decent ride quality. Better than an equivalent Golf.

Decent combination of ride and handling that might suit some people better than a harder sprung Golf or a Civic. A few inches taller than a Golf of Focus so easier to get in and out.
