Would my 2002 Mazda MX5 get written off just because of its age?

I have a 2002 Mazda MX5 that's done 73,000 miles. Mechanically it's very sound but the bodywork needs attention. If I spend the money on getting the relevant panels replaced and possibly having whole car resprayed, but then my car was in an accident (hopefully won't happen but you can never say never), would they write it off because of its age and book value? Or would they take into account the money spent on it and the actual condition of the car?

I'm an MX5 fan myself having had a few and the version you have rot like crazy. Personally, if it's that bad I would buy another. There are lots out there in better condition for not much more money and you would be better placed investing money in a more solid one. You will easily spend a lot more than you will ever get back on an insurance claim in the worst case scenario.

In the worst case scenario, you need to be in the best scenario prior to it happening. This can only be done if you get an agreed market value policy on the vehicle at the inception of the policy. You can do this either by using classic car insurance or using specialist car insurance. That way you know what your getting should the worst come. On a normal policy, your car is worth about £500-£800 using the guides. If you spend £3000 on it then they will still see it as only being worth £800.
