Is buying a diesel BMW 3 Series a waste of money?

I have a BMW 318 diesel. I'm over the moon with its economy and performance. It's coming to a time with the contract that l must buy it, return it or enter another contract. I was set to buy it for £13,500 but with the diesel issues surfacing I'm concerned. Will I just be wasting money?

If it's an N47 diesel it could develop timing chain problems and that's the reason to let it go, despite its 60mpg + economy.
