Why has my Renault Scenic's speedometer stopped working?

I have an S-reg Renault Scenic. My speedometer only works for two or three miles and then drops back down to zero, and stays there. Have you any advice?

Failed final drive speed sensor, possibly due to an oil gasket failure.
