Should I get a petrol or diesel 2014 Nissan Qashqai 1.5?

I would like to buy a second-hand (3 year old) Nissan Qashqai 1.5 diesel as it has the best review. I do about 9000 miles per year but I'm concerned with the press surrounding diesels and emissions, as well as the potential cost of low mileage maintenance issues. I would prefer a petrol but none of the SUVs seem to have decent mpg and some have high road tax. What do you think?

I averaged a genuine 45.7mpg in the Qashqai 1.2 DIG-T: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/nissan/nissan-qash.../ (But Real MPG only says 36.6mpg.)
