Which diesel car is least likely to give DPF problems?

I do about 12,000 miles a year, mostly short runs with occasional motorway long hauls. I know most (if not all) modern diesels have DPFs which can give problems. But I like diesels because of the relaxed driving style they encourage, and would prefer to replace my 2009 Vauxhall Astra non-DPF 1.7 diesel with a newish equivalent. Are there any comparable diesel cars or estates that don't have DPFs? If not, what makes are likely to give the fewest DPF problems?

Every diesel had to have a DPF from January 2011. We seem to get fewest reported problems from Hyundai/KIA 1.6 CRDIs and Renault/Nissan/Mercedes 1.6 dCi 130s.

I read a lot about diesel DPFs but how do I know when the fuel system is regenerating? I drive a Toyota RAV4 2.2-litre diesel. Nothing comes alight on the dash board and only once did I smell hot oil?
