Peugot 307 losing power

I have just bought a used (2005 model) Peugot 307 petrol and the engine management has come on. A warning that says "depollution system faulty" appears. Now the light has started flashing and the car is losing power. What could it be and what should I do?

Likely to be a dirty lambda sensor or a failing catalytic converter or both. If you bought it form a dealer have him fix it or get your money back.
