Which second hand small car - first car for 20 year old son - with £3000 price limit?

My 20 year old son is looking for his first car - he has a budget of £3000. It needs to be small, frugal and affordable for insurance, but also safe and reliable for motorway trips to university. Also he is 6 ft 4 in tall.

I wondered about the early Skoda Citygo, or older Fabias - or should we be looking at Corsas and Ford KA? Toyota Aygo or Peugeot 107 are other possibilities, but not, I think, so hot on safety or internal space.

What do you recommend? Thanks.

6' 4" is tricky. Polos can accommodate tall people but a £3k Polo is not usually a very good car. A Toyota Yaris 1.3 is much more reliable if he can fit in one. I know a bloke who is 6' 8" who can fit inside and drive an Aygo, but I don't recommend it.
