Wheel failure on BMW 2 Series

My daughter started leasing a new car three months ago. It runs on 17-inch alloy wheels and run-flat tyres. Last Monday she was driving home and the car suddenly veered to the left and hit a parked car. There were no potholes in the road and no evidence of any obstructions.

The front nearside wheel was split through the middle and the run-flat was shredded. She is understandably very distressed by the whole episode. I have urged her to speak to insurers to see if they can help or if she has legal insurance. What should we do?

I think this very probably was a component failure and she should speak to the dealer who supplied her with the car because if it was a component failure, in UK law he is liable even though in practice BMW will take over. Any demurring by the dealer, keep hold of the shattered wheel so you can have it checked and tested by a metallurgist. Do not allow it to 'disappear'.
