Gearbox failure after Volkswagen emissions upgrade

I have just had the emissions software upgrade done on my 2012 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI. While I have only driven a handful of miles, and can't report any changes in performance, it developed an oil leak which turned out to be due to the clutch pressure plate failing and basically destroying the gearbox - both now have to be replaced.

With knowing pretty much nothing about the working of cars, is there any likelihood that the failure and resulting damage could be in any way related to the software upgrade? Volkswagen has agreed to pay a percentage of the parts, but it still leaves a hefty bill.

No. It's likely that an oil leak from the transmission caused the clutch problem. Not unknown on Golfs and Volkswagen was recently in dispute with its transmission casing manufacturer.
