Ford Fusion radiator fan problems

Our Ford Fusion (2003 model) engine radiator fan has just stopped working but kicks in when we turn the A/C on (and the water leaks out of the pressure cap on water bottle). We've just bought a new thermostat and had it fitted at the garage and it's still the same ... does anyone know what the problem could be?

I'd guess that it is separately switched when the a/c is used but the engine block temp sensor/sender switch that normally switches on the fan has failed.
