Ford Fusion problems

On two occasions, over the space of two weeks, the steering on my Ford Fusion has suddenly become heavy. Three warning lights come on (oil, ignition warning and engine warning light) and after about five seconds it comes to a halt. When the engine is turned off and on again, the problem disappears and the car runs again.

The local garage has been unable to find anything on diagnostics as the fault appears to be cleared when the engine is turned off (if indeed it is stored at all) and since the fault is so intermittent, they have been unable to duplicate it in the garage or during a 40-mile drive. Any idea what could be wrong?

Check all multipin connectors between the ECU and engine fuel system and other components. They can 'dry out', suffer corrosion and (not in this weather) suffer moisture ingress. Just pull then apart dry them out with a hairdryer and put them back together. That action usually restores any loss of contact between the pins and sockets.
