Can you suggest a cheap to run used car?

My Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI is coming to the end of its life after seven years of good service and 220,000 miles. It's always done over 40mpg, even over 70mph. I'm now looking for a car that can do 60 or more MPG at 70mph that's cheap and second hand. It doesn't have to be as big but if it can be then that's a bonus. What do you recommend?

These were often despised but actually truly great family cars with a great engine. I've been in a 406 with that engine that had done 400,000 miles. I always got 50mpg. Unfortunately recent diesels have been proving a bit unreliable, largely due to all the DMF and Adblue gubbins they have to carry.

The best for 60mpg and for reliability is probably Honda's 1.6iDTEC in the Civic, or, for slightly less mpg, but good reliability and a lot lower purchase price, Renault's 1.6DCI 130 in the Megane.
