Which car for a small Scottish business?

My wife has a small cleaning business and many of her clients are in farm houses. This means Scottish country roads, farms tracks etc. Should I consider a small, proper 4x4 or will one of these new crossover types with high ride height do just the same? What are your thoughts on a second hand Dodge Nitro or Jeep Compass?
