Why are quoted CO2 emissions reducing so fast on Skoda's Octavia?

The current brochure does not list an Octavia 1.4 TSI DSG, but the Skoda on-line configurator allows you to configure one. The CO2 emissions are lower than was posted at the launch of the car. They are even lower than for the 1.4 TSI manual gearbox version at 116 g/km, putting it in Band C for VED purposes. It is also possible to order one. I have just done so to replace our 2010 Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Estate Elegance automatic, in the hope that it copes better with Buxton's winter driving conditions.

Manufacturers have been forced by the EC to reduce CO2 emissions across the board in the ECDC tests, or face fines. Unfortunately optimising the car engines for the tests seems to be having a detrimental effect on the real life fuel economy.
