Why have the low profile tyres on my Peugeot 3008 worn out in just 12,000 miles?

I have just had my Peugeot 3008 serviced and have been advised that the two front tyres need replacing. The car is one year old and has covered 12,500 miles. I purchased it in September 2012 and it had clocked up 6000 miles. I have covered 6500 miles since. I find it quite amazing that tyres should need replacing after such a short life. I have asked the garage if they would consider paying a contribution toward the new tyres but all I have been offered is replacement tyres at cost price. The tyres are Continental 235/45 R18 98W.

Not surprising at all. These tyres are a ridiculous size for the car. Perhaps if it was a sports car frequently used for track days on motor racing circuits they'd work, but on a car like a 3008, used on UK roads, they give a harder ride, worse steering feel, worse handling, wear faster, are more susceptible to damage from kerbs, road humps and potholes and cost more to replace.

That's why they are fitted in the first place. Tyre makers discount them to car manufacturers knowing they will make a fortune on the frequent, expensive replacements. If you want sensible tyre life, fit sensible wheels and tyres, either 15-inch with 195/65 R15 tyres or 16-inch with 205/55 R16 tyres.
