How did thieves get into my Mercedes CLS?

I own a Mercedes-Benz CLS, which was broken into by thieves and had sports equipment stolen from the boot. The problem I have is there’s no physical evidence of a break in, which means the insurer will not pay out. Surely the car should automatically lock itself when parked and left unattended?

As far as I know you have to physically lock it. If it auto unlocks when you approach you have to leave the key somewhere to check it is not unlocked when someone else approaches.
