ABS problems with Toyota Yaris Verso

I have owned my 2000 Toyota Yaris Verso [119,000 miles] from new. It has always been serviced at the recommended intervals by either franchised dealers or trusted independents.

Just lately, when applying very light brake pressure as I come to a halt, I’ve noticed that the ABS system is kicking in. This is felt through the brake pedal itself and can be heard, too. In all other respects, the brakes function normally. There is no warning light on the dash display and no fluid loss. What’s going on?

Could be worn discs or pads or rusty reluctor rings affecting the ABS sensors.
