Best small car for commuting to work?

I'm looking to change the car to use for commuting to work. I have £5000 to spend and will do 15,000 miles a year. I’m considering a 2002 Ford Focus, but would like something smaller and cheaper to run.

I quite fancy the Toyota Aygo/107/C1 but the reports on clutch failure and water leakage seem to detract from what looks like a great choice. Are there any other obvious alternatives that I've overlooked?

The faults with the Aygo/107/C1 were gradually fixed over the years, and, of course, any early cars with a replacement clutch will have had the later clutch fitted. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/miscellaneous/2013-07/bi.../

I’m in the market for a used car. I want something small, with five-doors and low/zero VED. What would you recommend for £5000?
What car is best for me? I like a high driving position, boot space for camping, good fuel economy, ideally some bodywork protection/trims, good all-round driving visibility, cheap to insure/tax.
