Why is the oil level rising in my Honda Civic diesel?

My Honda Civic 2.2 i-DTEC, which I bought last month with 5800 miles on the clock, appears to be making oil.

I have done 700 miles and the level has risen at least half an inch on the dipstick since I bought it. This morning the dealer who supplied it says there's nothing to worry about and that the oil level is perfect.

That's bad news, but it's the first time I have heard of it happening with a Honda 2.2 i-DTEC. It means that the DPF has become blocked, so that the extra diesel fuel injected into it is not being burned and is sinking to the sump, contaminating the lubrication oil.

If the car has been used for a succession of short runs from cold starts, what you have experienced may happen. You might be able to clear it by taking the car on a long run, but you should take it to a Honda dealer for a forced regeneration of the DPF and an engine oil and filter change.
