Which cars offer good comfort for a back pain sufferer?

I had a slipped disc a few years ago, and still get backache. I find that sitting for more than about half an hour brings on back and leg pain, and driving has become a particular problem so I now take the train for longer trips. I have a 2004 Mercedes C230 and a 1998 BMW 328. I find the same problem when driving both cars and I'm thinking of changing. A friend has suggested that some cars have adjustable lumbar support such as Audi and Volvo. Do you have any knowledge of this or other advice for a back sufferer please?

Right-hand drive BMW E36 and E46 have slightly offset driving positions, but generally for back pain sufferers MPVs are best, because they are easier to get in and out of. Try a Mazda 5 1.6D TS2 which is incredibly comfortable, or the old shape Ford C-Max. Always look for a long seat squab because better calf support means less strain on the back.
