Which small family car would you recommend?

My son is looking for a family car and is just entering parenthood. What make and model would you recommend we look at? We are seeking a car from around 2006 to 2008 with under 30,000 miles.

Sensible, practical little car with good features like 'Triptic' rear seat and some diesel engines under 121g/km. Plenty of character too.
