What hatchback for a daily commute?

My husband is looking to replace his 03 reg 1.3 Toyota Corolla which we have had from new. He commutes about 45-50 miles per day, so we think a diesel would be the most economical option.

Max budget around £8-9k which would include any trade in for the Toyota. It needs to be a family friendly car as it would be used occasionally with 2 children.
Currently looking at Toyota Auris, Hyundai i30, Ford Focus.

Any other makes/models worth considering? What are the pitfalls in buying this age of diesel car?

I'd go for a Hyundai i30 1.6CRDI or a KIA cee'd 1.6CRDI 2010 or earlier to be sure it does not come with a diesel particulate filter. That should be very reliable.
