How to diagnose a fault more cheaply

I bought a 2008 Laguna a year ago and the speed limiter/cruise control worked. The car is going in for its 4 year service and the garage wants to charge me £83 just to check the limiter/cruise control switch as these functions no longer work. As a pensioner I need to save money where I can and I have been told that French cars are notorious for their electrics so is there any way that I can check if there is a fault with the switch/wiring?

I tried to get a Haynes workshop manual for this car but they don't publish one. I have got a Haynes for my 2001 Laguna - do you think the electrics would be the same?

£83 is a standard charge for a franchised dealer OBDII port diagnostic check. So don't go to a Renault dealer. Find an independent familiar with the model.
