Which engine for a Ford S-MAX?

I'm homing in on MPV for family (two adults and three growing kids) and have discounted Grand C-Max and Mazda5 in favour of S-Max on basis of needing the extra room.

I need your advice on engines please: I know you liked the 2.0 Ecoboost SCTi from your road test, but the diesels have much better MPG. We typically do enough runs from cold that I'd question the oil burner, but appreciate your advice - petrol or diesel and which engine? Does the diesel have DMF?

Diesels have DMFs and DPFs. If a lot of your runs are relatively short from cold (less than 10 miles) then a diesel is a bad idea long term.
