Which small FIAT is cheap to run?

Enforced early retirement has meant the company BMW 520d has gone and we need to economise, but I still want something with a little bit of "oomph". I want to buy a nearly new Fiat 500 and ideally would like an Abarth. However, I am concerned about the additional running costs of servicing, tyres, brakes, spare parts etc., when compared to the Twin Air. Will the Abarth be much more expensive to run, and is the extra performance, handling and fun worth it?

The standard Abarth on standard 16" wheels is great fun and much faster than a TwinAir, and if you drive it quickly you will get better economy. The TwinAir give you the choice of fun or economy, not both at the same time. But, in fact, you probably won't want to rush about everywhere all the time, so as long as you take it easy most of the time the TwinAir will be more economical. In real life the 1.2 is even more economical because it's less fun to drive so you don't feel inclined to rev the nuts off it. I get 46mpg from one in winter and 55mpg in summer. Servicing is £200 and £300. New timing belt needed for 1.2 and Abarth every 4 years. The TwinAir is chain cam.
