Noisy new Passat

I just bought the car yesterday, drove lovely nearly all the way home (38 miles from the dealer) and as we came into our village the engine started making a noise that I can only describe as being like someone putting nuts and bolts in a blender!

We called the dealer straight away and he has come to pick it up to look at it and hopefully fix it!

a) What could it be
b) Would we have to pay anything towards cost of fixing it? We have just shelled out our savings on buying it, we can't afford to put it right!

The dealer is liable, so if he can't fix it you get your money back. You definitely do not have to pay him to fix it.
