Buying a car for back problems

At 60yrs old, I would like to buy my first decent motor vehicle. It is for touring and carrying grand children. I am 6.00 foot tall and suffer from back problems. I have therefore, been looking at Nissan X Trail and Ford S Max. This will be my first and last purchase of a vehicle so i have to take into consideration cost of parts and maintenance etc. I wouldn't be using it everyday so i don't know which would be better petrol or diesel. I would appreciate any help or suggestions of other vehicles as I don't know anything about motor vehicles.

I am currently running a Mazda 5 1.6D TS2. This may well be ideal for you. It is extremely comfortable with possibly the best entry and egress of any current car (better than the new C-Max and the S-Max), it has soft, long-travel suspension, sensible profile 205/55 R16 tyres, excellent handling and roadholding, good gear ratios, perfect cruise control and at 45mpg is reasonably economical. Not a good idea to go for an SUV because being higher off the ground there is less height between the floor and the ceiling.
