Winter tyre sizes on a Kia Sportage

Will 255/55 x 18 winter tyres be ok to fit to my Sportage which currently has 235/55 R18 fitted? The winter tyres would be fitted to suitable steel wheels rather than the existing alloys.

Wider isn't better in winter. Narrower is better. What would be better still would be deeper profile tyres on 16" rims, assuming the wheels will fit around the car's brakes.
