Car using water

I've got a Fiesta Zetec 1.4 and it seems to be using some water. It has not overheated as of yet but I have not been in any major traffic. The fan seems to only cut in after the car has been switched off, it does not cut in while the car is running when it heats up.

Any help would be appreciated, and if you could let me know where the common places for leaks would be if it is leaking some water.

Possibly an airlock caused by starting to use the heater again after not using it all summer. Fiestas have a dodgy electric valve between the engine and the heater matrix. Ideas for purging an airlock here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/cooling-system-airlocks/ The airlock will cause coolant to blow out of the cap of the coolant reservoir. Could also be the fan temp sensor/sender switch which is screwed into the water jacket of the block.
