What do tyre speed ratings mean?

Can you tell me what the speed ratings mean on a set of tyres?

The speed rating of a tyre indicates the maximum speed that tyre is safe to travel at. Q is rated for 99mph, R 106mph, S 112mph, T 118mph, U 124mph, H 130mph, V 149mph, W 168mph, Y 186mph. Although you might never travel at such high speeds, you need to make sure you fit tyres that are approved for the maximum speed of your car. If you don't, your car insurance might be invalidated.
