If I import a 2016 vehicle back to the UK, will it be registered as the year of import or manufacture?

I have a vehicle with a 2016 registration, which is currently in the £0 annual road tax bracket. I'm planning to export this vehicle to Cyprus, where I will be working for around 3 years. At the end of this time, I may bring it back to the UK. If I import the vehicle to the UK, will it be registered as a 2016 registration again or will it be registered as per the year of the import? Also, will this affect the tax bracket as per the new rates introduced in 2017?

When you import the car back to the UK, a registration number will be assigned based on the year it was manufactured. You'll pay the same VED rates as you're currently paying.
