I have a small budget for a secondhand car. What should I look for?

I'm looking for a secondhand, small, reliable family car with a low insurance group. I don't know much about cars and would like advice. My budget is about £2000.

With a budget of £2000, don't concentrate too much on finding a certain make or model. Buy whatever's local, in good condition with a pile of service receipts to prove it's been looked after. A long MOT is important, too. If you do wish to narrow down your search, a Ford Focus will always be a sensible choice, or a Honda Civic.
