A previously cancelled insurance policy is making renewal quotes very expensive. Any advice?

I've previously had an insurance policy cancelled for missed payment and, as a result, I’m having difficulty finding a reasonable renewal quote. What would you suggest?

Potentially raise a complaint with the previous insurer. If you missed the payment for a compelling reason, this could be taken into account. If there was a good reason, it could then be that the history of a cancelled policy is removed from record. Make sure you shop with brokers, price comparison sites and directly with insurers too.
