Best small and reliable automatic car?

We need a new or nearly new reliable small car. It must have an automatic gearbox, 4/5 doors, petrol engine and be large enough for long 200-mile trips. We currently have a 2001 Toyota Yaris, which is past its best. What would you recommend?

I'd recommend a Hyundai i20 or Kia Rio. They're mechanically very similar, come with long warranties and are available with reliable dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. Also consider a new Ford Fiesta with its very good six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

I'd be looking for an as-new pre-registered model. There are some excellent deals available at the moment: www.honestjohn.co.uk/best-pre-reg-and-nearly-new-c.../
