Scotch miss

My niece is 18 years old, having passed her test 15 months ago. She wants something with a bit more zip than her 1.0 litre 03 Reg Corsa (that is going to another family member) at least as much room and a bit of street cred. She commutes about 40 miles each way to work on a fast dual carriageway. We want something with a high safety rating, good mpg and affordable insurance. The budget for a 1-2 year old car is £8-£10k. What should we she buy?

Mazda 2 1.3TS2. Specifically that model. Like a Fiesta, a bit cheaper inside, but in many ways better than a Fiesta, and more fun to drive.
