Any diesel automatic has the potential to cost a lot in maintenance at this age and budget. Consider a petrol unless you cover high miles. If you do, look at the Skoda Octavia or Honda Accord. Both are good but not immune to issues - insist on full service history and give them regular motorway runs to clear the diesel particulate filter.
