What's the best first car?

My daughter is 18 and has £3000 to spend on her first car. She loves the look of a Fiat 500 but I have some concerns after reading reviews about performance and safety. She is also likes the Ford Fiesta or possibly a Polo, Corsa or Ford Ka. She would mainly be doing town driving and is happy with a small engine. Could you please advise?

The Fiat 500 has a slightly better complaints record than the Volkswagen Polo. But the 2008-2013 Fiesta beats both and the Corsa beats the Fiesta. A 2009 - 2017 Ford Ka is a Fiat 500 with a slightly different body that was built in the same factory in Poland.
