00 2.0 HDI battery light, boot switch, fan problem - gareth.j
Hi all, i need some help on this.... My citroen xsara 2.0 hdi 110 is giving me some odd problems,
When i am driving, the battery light will start flashing/ beeping when the car first hits 2500 rpm, then it flashes/beeps almost constantly while the engine is revving above 1800 rpm (approx). I can 'ease' the situation by putting the fan on maximum in the cockpit, and putting headlights on. Strangely enough, the fan goes off, and the lights dip when the battery light comes on??? I drive 80 miles a day, and have no starting problems, so i assume the battery and alternator are ok.

The other problem is the boot switch, when i unlock the car with key fob, the boot switch activates, i press boot release button 10 times and am ok for my journey, if i just open and close boot, it opens when i start car, please point me in the right direction, it's driving me mad,
Thanks
Gareth

Hi,

I have a '00 Xsara 1.4 and have just started having the same boot problems - I just Googled it and came out with your post - so I thought I would reply. The boot seems to open when starting the car, although if you leave the car running and re-shut the boot it seems OK. It also seems to randomly pop-open when approaching the car.

My only possible thought could be to replace the key fob battery - other than that, I'm stumped. Hopefully I will try that today.

Any further information, resolutions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Matt

Turned out to be a knackered battery. Had to call the AA this morning as it was completely dead - try replacing your battery, low voltage (when cranking) could well be the cause as it has cured my boot popping open on starting the car, and would also explain your battery light problem!

Cheers Matt

Thanks Matt, will give that a go, problem has been getting worse for the last month or so, I guess that the battery may be 'dying', although, I haven't had any starting problems....what about you? did you have problems starting before your battery gave up?

Had my local motor factors to check my battery, they said one cell is 'gone' I was quite pleased to hear that (strange as it sounds!) I bought a new battery, fitted it.......and problems are still there......looks like I need to get an auto electrician to look at it.

I have now replaced alternator and battery, the battery light and fan etc are now sorted... boot switch is still dodgy, will post a fix if I manage to fix it.

Morning Gareth,

Glad to hear you're getting somewhere!

My boot has also started playing up again! Obviously it wasn't battery related, although it seemed to fix it for a couple of days - strange.

I opened up the keyfob and there was some residue over the switch contacts, I cleaned it up with contact cleaner and it has helped, although I don't think solved, the problem.

Either way, once you're in the car if you lock it, it prevents the boot from poping open, so saves you having to keep going and re-shutting the boot :-)

I would place my money on a faulty switch in the boot itself, there are instructions available here c4owners.org/plugins/content/content.php?content.13 to do so (it's a C4 but I'm sure it's a similar setup) . Obviously is a relatively common fault - as someone has bothered to write a how-to!

If you manage to give that a go, give me message to tell me if it helps, otherwise I probably give it a go next weekend, so can report back then.

Good luck!

Just a quick update. If you open the boot and remove the boot handle and then the upper boot lining, pull back the foam paper in the centre that covers the access to the switch and unplug the push button switch (green connector), it disconnects the switch on the boot - which is what was making my boot keeping poping - but you can still open the boot using the button on the keyfob. The link in my last post has some pictures etc.

I rarely use the push switch on the boot, so this is a huge hassle-saver!

Matt, You are a legend!
read your thread yesterday at 5.00pm, by 5.20 I was done, the boot now opens when I say, not when I open door, at some point I will change switch, but that's only if I feel the need to, it still opens on the key-fob.
Thanks a million for your help
Gareth
