There is a car in my street untaxed and uninsured according to the relevant websites.
I have twice completed the on-line report to DVLA and twice phoned in as well but still no action has been taken.
DVLA were unwilling to give me any information whatsoever although the last time I called they acknowledged that they already had a previous notification of it (presumably mine)
Is there any way I can follow this up to establish why no obvious action has been taken? I first reported it back in October.
(Car is sitting on the street parked against the pavement in a normal manner)
|
Contact your council?
I wonder if NCP as subcontractor to DVLA clamp in your area? They might like the revenue. They normally drive around relying on ANPR.
|
|
If you really feel the need, is there a "Police Aware" sticker on it? Hm?
|
Depending on your Police Force - you can contact your local beat Officer direct by phone - A PCSO will probably spend a happy hour removing it for you.
|
There was a untaxed car parked under the only tree on my street. I phoned my local police station only to be told "we don't deal with that kind of thing, and to ring the DVLA".
So I did and was told that it had been reported already and they could not find it, I told them the reg, make and model, even the colour and if they still could not find it then its parked under the only tree on the street. They said that they would send someone within two to three weeks
It appears to me unless the DVLA computer spots it or you are caught red handed by the police no one is bothered about removing them.
|
|
|
Contact your local council, they'll deal with it. It'll be treated as an abandoned vehicle and as such will be quickly dealt with.

Expensive, though impressive. Don't forget the marshmallows.
On the bright side, it's just given me an idea. Have you thought about siphoning the fuel from it? Might be 30 quid's worth.

Have you thought about siphoning the fuel from it?
Two wrongs do not make a right.

....and its advice like that like that (however tongue in cheek) lands innocent people in trouble.

PU's right you know - petrol is seriously horrible if you get it in your mouth! ;-)

Hello
A little porkie my help.
Call the local council, tell them about the car & ho kids are playing inside it & tried to set fire to it the other day, tust me, the car will be gone the next/same day.
In my area the people to contact is 'cleansweep.'
Like most, I do not advocate lying, but worht it here as the majority of hit and runs are people like the untaxd car
Good luck

If it is on the road then report to your local council - they will remove abandonned vehicles on the road. They put a 7 day notice on it and if the owner is not forthcoming then off it goes.

A few years ago there was a part vandalised car at the foot of the road. Council said it would put a notice on it then after 2 weeks uplift.
Solution - release handbrake and roll it down to Scottish Power substation. Phone Electricity Co and warn them it was there and potentially could be set on fire - uplifted within 1 hour- SUCCESS!!
|
Well 2 steps forward, one step back.
Completed online form for Council to report abandoned car. They phoned me back an hour later (impressive) to advise that although the car is not taxed or insured, it's regisered keeper's address is n he same street that the car is sitting on.
Therefore they cannot take any action as it is technically not abandoned.
Next port of call is local police station - I now have a bee in my bonnet about this!!
|
What?
I'd have thought you could abandon a car in your own street if you took no interest in it, let the tyres deflate etc, etc.
How many streets do you have to go from your own before you can abandon your car?
I'd ask your council to explain. Sounds like an excuse for doing nothing. Unusual, that.
|
Just a wee update on this.
Phoned the DVLA back twice and asked for it to be escalated.
This week I noticed the car had a clamp fitted (rather crudely with thick chains) and a large sticker on the windscreen.
Has sat like that for a couple of days but the clamp seemed to be sitting at a very weird angle.
Drove past today and it is now sitting in his driveway minus the clamp.
So either he has removed the clamp himself and moved into driveway or he has somehow or other managed to get DVLA to remove clamp - could he go straight to SORN from being clamped? I don't think there is any chance clamp has been removed, car MOTd and taxed in that time? Status is still the same on the DVLA enquiry website.

It is amazing how police forces differer. GMP have been very good with this sort of thing in the past few years.
An untaxed vehicle is a police matter I am amazed you got that responce.
|
not for county Durham police, its "we dont deal with that kind of thing" matter
|
Ironic isn't it. If you genuinely forget to renew your car tax or declare SORN you get an automatic £80 fine, with virtually no chance of appealing.
Yet we all see untaxed cars parked on the roads where nothing ever seems to be done about them, despite calls to the Police or DVLA.
Like most government organisations the DVLA seems to concentrate more on harshly punishing the generally law abiding for minor mistakes because they're easy to trace and will pay up without a fuss, instead of dealing with the blatant offenders that actually take some effort to sort out.

The logic of that would be that the best way to avoid tax is to complain to the police about your own car. Then when they get the next complaint they just wearily move the paperwork to another pile.
Like setting off a burglar alarm, waiting to see if anything happens, then going in and clearing the place.

I am in the same boat, theres a pug 106 silver down the road from me, that not been taxed since nov last year, the cars in daily use with a young lad at the wheel and huge aftermarket alloys. so would guess no insurance. the car is parked 100ft from a primary school and often dumped on the pavement blocking movement of children to school who have to walk into the road...
i have reported the car 4 times, since nov.
and nothing has happened, given the car details, the house its parked opposite the postcode etc....
it even says on the dvla website that police are not the ones to contact the dvla are...
yet when the cars are being driven its the police who have to stop them...
i live in a pretty rural location and hardly see a police car let alone an ANPR system set up, i just worry about the day this kid has a prang and doesn't hang about as hes not legal...
grrrr the system sucks
Paul...
paying 175/year on a 9 year old v40.

Exactly I agree with you my daughters husband was working away from home and his car was on the drive broken down for months I told her to cash in the tax disc because the car wasnt goint to be driven again it needed scrapping she cashed in the tax but didnt know she had to sign a sorn she was fined an had to pay the tax up to date again.
There is a neighbour who hasnt had tax since last march leaves it parked on the road and drives it around at weekends I have twice reported it to dvla and they have done nothing.
They always go for the easy target everytime

I understand you're trying to do the "right thing", but unless it's causing you problems being there, hows about you mind your own business?. I'm assuming it's not being driven, it's just parked there. If the bloke/women who owns the vehicle isn't driving it then leave it be, maybe they can't afford to tax/insure it, so there leaving it parked up until they can? unless he's driving it, not crime of the century!. Either way, is it worth all the crap you're going through to grass up some bloke on your street who's not payed his car tax?
I don't condone unisurned drivers (they cost us all a fortune!) / not paying car tax etc before the jobsworths start having a go, I just think maybe people should spend time doing something else, other than checking if the tax is out of date or checking a database to see if it's insured, on a car that's parked on your street and hasn't been driven (presumably), where the owner actually lives according to DVLA.
No doubt many will disagree with me on here and that's fine, but my opinion is, for a car thats not taxed, that has NOTHING to do with you and isn't causing you a problem, mind your business...

'Sir! Sir! Williams is eating chocolate and reading the Beano behind his desk lid, sir!'
Tchah. In my day we couldn't abide sneaks (or the dangerous lynchings that pass for playground fights these days).

Cars that are not taxed .. often are not insured.
Uninsured cars add on average £30 to every driver's insurance bill.. every year.
Anyone who does not care about untaxed drivers can pay my £30.
Any offers?
Thought not...
|
Cars that are not taxed are by definition not insured, I believe.
|
No. Discussed here 10 20 times its not the case.

You could try reporting them on the Fix My Street website; this appears to be reasonably effective for such things. ( Although less so for things like blocked drains, which the council inspectors apparently cannot find even when told publicly which house they are outside! )

Should read posts a tad more carefully.

According to MIB, 70% of motorists without tax and insurance have criminal records.

Probably for driving without tax and insurance ;)

Depends on who insures you. On my policy having tax is a condition of cover: no tax, no cover.

I was shot down in flames on here for suggesting similar a good while ago. If it's not causing a problem to you, forget it and don't stress about it. I'd rather have our friends patrolling the roads keeping them safe from nutcase drivers than spending hours investigating an untaxed car. The system will deal with it eventually in one form or another. I mean, would you grass up a neighbour for no TV licence? It's no different really is it?
Baz

If it's not causing a problem to you
Such as the owner driving off in it, losing control and running you over... bit late then I suppose...
I'm assuming that an uninsured or taxed car is more likely to be driven badly (probably by an unqualified/banned driver) than one which is legal... it would be interesting if WP or someone else in the know could confirm this one way or the other... though it makes sense to me...
|

What has that got to do with whether it's taxed or not?!!!! I would agree with you if we were talking about insurance but not VED. I don't think you can jump to that conclusion.
|

Baz >>
If everyone paid the right amount of VED, TV licence fee and income tax the result would be that we'd all pay less for our VED, TV licence and income tax.
Because some people don't, those of us who do have to pay more.

rubbish!
it is often quoted that uninsured drivers cost us 30% on our policies , yet the TV and other media , has shown that thousands of cars have been impounded/crushed ,, therefore the percentage of uninsured drivers must have fallen?
hav,nt seen a reduction on my policy yet?
This govermant (or others) along with insurance companies , would pocket the profit ,

Why would it? They just go and get another car... I suppose when all those cheap cars disappear we might see a reduction and those drivers have been banned (and are kept off the roads), but until then....
It may be an excuse, EF, by the insurance cos to increase premiums, but its one where I can see the logic and tend to believe them.

Read the second para, Bazza, that explains where I'm coming from...

I have! ;)

Enfield Freddy is missing my point.
He and 9 of his mates go to the pub and say they'll settle up at the end of the evening.
The total bill is £90, that is £9 each.
But if someone slopes off just before the bill arrives, that still leaves £90 to pay and results in a bill of £10 each.
Same with tax, VED, etc, etc. The fewer people put the right amount in the pot, the more the rest of us end up paying.
|
I don't think I'm "lashing back" to suggest that if the owner couldn't give stuff about the law or even just doing the right thing when it comes to car tax and insurance he's hardly likely to be a member of the IAM is he?
I wouldn't want that driver anywhere near me on the roads.
|
How do you follow up?
How about by minding your own business.
|
Try this instead:
Curry house owner wants to make the best profit he can. He allows for 10% of people doing a runner without paying. Charges on average £20 a head.
10 people go to curry house, one does a runner. 9 people pay £20 and curry house gets £180
10 people go to curry house and all pay. 10 people pay £20 and curry house gets £200
If you were the curry house would you drop your prices or keep the extra profit? My personal experience of business is that its all out to maximise profit, they are not a charity.
|
...How about by minding your own business...
If we all took a little more interest in our immediate surroundings, the world would be a more pleasant place.
There is a line between that and nosey parkerism, but this car was in the OP's street, not in his neighbour's bedroom.
|
|
|
|
I don't call it "grassing up" reporting anyone for not buying road tax.You say "maybe they can't afford to tax and insure it"what else on the car can't they afford to do,road legal tyres, shock absorbers, brakes?
We all end up paying more in the end for people not paying their legal obligations,I think you must have first hand experience of road tax evasion, correct me if I am wrong.
