2004 - Aftermarket Thatcham Alarm Installation - topdown
Hi,

I have bought an aftermarket alarm for my 2004 convertible Astra G. I then started to think ............................. If there is a seperate blipper remote for the alarm, and the alarm is connected to the central locking etc. etc. will it have an effect on my ability to raise and lower the roof using the key remote using its central locking button? How many remotes can you have connected to the central locking, roof up/down etc. etc.!!!!!!

Anyone out there have the answer please?

Hasn't the car got a factory-fitted alarm? Adding another is just asking for a nightmare.

The factory-fit alarm for Astra-G ('98-'03 + coupe '04-'05) is already Thatcham Cat 1.

No. I feel it should have, but reading the manual it was an option and there are no sensors anywhere. When the alarm is factory fitted the sensors are mounded into the courtesy light surround, as per the mark3 I had previously, but not in this. It was actually company owned before I had it, so I suppose they could afford just to replace if it got stolen!

Meant to read "moulded" into courtesy light surround.

the car is a 2004 model, i.e. not 98 - 03, so maybe that's why it's not got one.

or, if I'm wrong, is there another way of telling whether there's an alarm on it or not (without breaking windows)? As I said, there's no sign of one, either the sensors nor siren under bonnet. No seperate push switches on bonnet, boot or doors. Nothing.

It would be unlikely you would have volumetric sensors in a soft-top. Have you got a label for a "Power sounder?"

There is no obvious sign of an alarm; the sounder is in the wheelarch and it works off the doorlocks. Do the indicators flash when you lock it?

P.S. "Thatcham" is meaningless. A "Cat 1" is an alarm; a "Cat 2" is an immobilizer - fitted by shysters, there's no guarantee of quality or efficacy in either term.

All UK cars after 1998 had to have at least an immobiliser as STD fit.

This car may be an import, however OP says it has a Vauxhall badge (or maybe an Opel import rebadged as Vauxhall!)

Was that a typo, because I thought it was 1993 or 1994?

The following lists contain *most* manufacturers specifications.

My 1995 Honda Prelude had no alarm/immobiiser fitted when I bought it - it was not Std - Immobiliser cost (IIRC) £80 fitted and got £90 off the 1st year Premium!

Astra-G hatch/saloon/estate/van ran '98-'03 when they were replaced by Astra-H - the coupe/convertible remained in production until '05.

Check under the bonnet for "powersounder" label AND bonnet switch, both of which are fitted as part of the OE alarm.

Many alarms/immobilisers don't reach Thatcham requirements - it's not an irrelevancy.

Hi everyone,

answers to a couple of questions:

1) the inicators flash twice when I use the remote locking and press twice. I understood this was for 1) central locking 2) mechanical deadlocks.

2) there is no powersound sticker or seperate bonnet switch.

I have tried holding the bonnet down with the catch held out, locking the car, then opening the bonnet and nothing has happened, i.e no siren. I have also tried locking the car with the window open and then putting my arm in to unlock the door. Again no response.

The immodbiliser works from the key being in the ignition, apparently.

So, there we have it. I think immobiliser fitted OE, deadlocks OE, alarm an option but not fitted.

Back to my initial question: how do the aftermarket blippers work with the remote roof operation from the original remote. Can an aftermarket alarm be used from the original blipper, or can an alarm be "stand alone", meaning use the original blipper for central locking and roof, then arm the alarm seperately from it's own blipper. Any thoughts?

Having established that your car doesn't have the OE alarm - the rest of the information you need should be contained in the instructions for the alarm you've bought. Contact the alarm manufacturer for further details.

If you install it yourself, it won't be Thatcham Approved - that needs installation by a registered fitter.

I'm no expert on alarm systems but it sounds like you are going to try to make two complex systems both work in harmony with each other and it could turn out to be a real headache.

For a start I think you need an alarm system that is suitable for a convertible, ie one which can be set with the roof in the down position. The last thing that you want is to have to put the roof up everytime you get out of your car.

Also as far as I am aware the more top of the range alarms have extra add on modules to power other things off the one remote control. Hence you could program one of the buttons on an alarm remote to power the roof up/down. The last thing you want is to carry around a handful of different fobs.

It might be too late but I would advise you to get some specialist advice and you will be able to see all of the options available to you and it might also be wise to have a professional to fit the system as it could all become very complex and troublesome.

Did you wait after arming - many alarms do not arm for 30 seconds or so after setting.

The alarm you need is a Cat 2 >1 upgrade which has a self powered siren with alarm control unit switched on and off by your original car remote fob when engaging the double/deadlock position. This way there is no need for an additional fob.hth
