I have recently bought a 1.4 Nissan Note (more of which at a later date) which has a cam chain rather than a belt. Chain drive seems pretty rare nowadays but what are the advantages of a belt over a chain. Seems that the belt just means a copuple of hundred quid down the road to replace the belt every now and then.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Chain more expensive to manufacture, I guess. Both benefit from clean oil, though.

Chain relies on oil as the tensioner, and imo chain is the better of the two...

Any engine will benefit from clean oil but a cam drive belt is not lubricated and not affected by the engine oil SFAIK.
