Toyota Auris and Auris HSD 2013 - Flat 12 volt battery - RunningInPleasePass

Hi,

I'm the owner of a new Toyota Auris Excel Hybrid, the car would not start after a week of ownership, it had a flat 12 volt battery.

It has been in the dealers workshop three weeks now waiting for a new battery, I would like to hear from anybody else who has had a similar problem.

Thanks in advance.

It should not take thrre weeks to charge or source a new battery!

This problem is not going away, it's effecting cars all across Europe

It seems the battery fitted is too small for the job.

Two options.

1. trickle charger.

2. fit a Optima battery.

I looked at buying a hybrid two years ago and found all that..

Part of the problem is that no-one really knows how big or small this issue is.

Yes there are 8 affected members of Toyota Owners Club (TOC), 1 of whom is in Eire, and 35 affected forum members in Germany and Italy.

There are also TOC members who own Auris Hybrids who posted on TOC and haven't been affected.

This only seems to affect the second generation Auris Hybrid.

Unlike the title of the topic implies, the Auris petrol and diesel models aren't affected.

The issue is currently being looked at by Toyota. See:

"I've contacted the MD of Toyota UK, and have been contacted by one of Toyota Customer Relations people, they want to keep my car for a while to try and sort this problem out, so I'll keep you posted on any progress.

The guy who contacted me seemed to be very well informed about this problem so I asked him a few questions, from memory, this is what I found out from him.

This issue he assures me is only effecting a small number of cars.

They have looked at the battery and feel confident that they have sized it correctly, the reason he gave for the Auris battery being small is that the electronics are newer and designed to take less current.

They have logged the cars voltages etc. over a prolonged time to make sure that the problem was not happening after a prolonged run.

The suggestion that it is caused by owners keeping keys too near the car is a fallacy, the systems are designed to cope with such situations.

If all the above is true, which of course I don't know, then it would suggest the problem is rogue cars rather then a fundamental problem with all of them.

As I say Toyota have my car now, and I don't know how long they will keep it for, but they are due to speak to me again on Wednesday to give me an update, so I'll keep you posted."

For information.

On the official Toyota Auris Blog I asked the question:

Have Toyota got any nearer sorting out the problem of the 12 volt battery going flat for the Auris Excel Hybrid yet?

It has effected me twice, and on some forums, one owner is on their third battery.

It’s very hard to get an handle on the number of owners effected but UK forums have about 8 cases and European ones about 35.

The reply:

Hi there and thanks for your post.
We obviously are aware of this issue and work is still ongoing regarding the resolution with our European office. Regrettably we do not have a timeframe at this stage but we are aware of the disappointment and inconvenience this is causing so we do resolve this matter as quickly as we can.

For what it's worth my thinking now on this problem is, it's a combination of things that come together for certain owners depending on their driving habits, I could swap my car, which has had this problem twice, with an owner that has not experienced the problem, and I would still eventually have a flat battery.

If you think about it, for Toyota, testing my faulty car against specification would be very simple, and it probably tests okay.

What they can't do is test a car for every driving eventuality:

One driver may drive many miles a week, but those miles may consists of just a long journey with lights on and in ECO mode.

Another may still drive many miles, but those miles are lots of small journeys in daylight and in NORMAL driving mode.

The car has to be able to cope with all driving habits.

My suggestion to stop this problem is:

Fit a 45Ah or larger battery.

Increase the battery charge rate.

Look at the software to see if driving in ECO mode effects the battery charging.

Fit lower power consuming equipment to the car, LED bulbs come to mind, to help mitigate power drain.

Investigate what happens when the key is near the car, to see if it has to happen at all, i.e. outside mirrors opening, and if it doe's have to happen, for how long.

I'm sure that Toyota have thought of these things, and many more, but it would involve a lot of expense, and an accountant would say for the numbers effected it is not worth doing.

I live in hope of a solution, but my confidence of it happening soon is not high.

The reason suspected for the battery going flat is a fault with the Hazard Warning control.

I have had a problem with the battery in my Toyota Auris Excel Hybrid going flat twice, and my car has been into my local dealer for about a week to be tested.

I had a meeting with a Manager of Toyota Customer Product Support, he talked me through how Toyota deals with this type of problem, and what they suspect the problem is.

First an explanation of the main items talked about as I understand them:

CAN bus (for Controller Area Network) is a car communication network that connects devices to each other around a car, a modern car will have a number of these networks.

ECU (for Electronic Control Unit) is a small computer, connected to the relevant CAN bus, reading and controlling devices connected to the CAN bus.

When the Hazard Warning Switch is operated it puts two signals onto the relevant CAN bus, the first signal alerts the ECU and tells it to wait for the second signal, this second signal instructs the ECU to turn on the Hazard Warning Lights.

It is possible for the Hazard Warning Switch to send the first signal and alert the ECU and instruct it to wait for the second signal, but not to send the second signal, the ECU is then left waiting, as the Hazard Warning Lights have to be able to operate all the time, even when the car is turned off and locked, so the ECU stays waiting all the time.

The power consumption of the ECU is nearly 600mA, the driver can stop, start, lock and unlock the car but this power consumption will be a constant drain, it is only when the car is off, and not charging the battery that this ECU power consumption will show itself, and if the car is off for a prolonged time will completely drain the battery.

Once the battery is flat, there is no power to the ECU, and when the battery is replaced or recharged the ECU has forgotten it is waiting for a signal from the Hazard Warning Switch, so the fault has gone.

To test for this fault, you have to measure the battery load with everything switched off to see if the 600mA ECU load is present, it’s also possible with specialist equipment plugged into the OBD socket, to check the status of the CAN bus and ECU.

At the moment the only way to remove this fault, is to turn the Hazard Warning Lights on then off, powering up then eventually down the ECU normally.

This problem can affect all MKII Auris Hybrids, all other models are not affected.

I have been assured that Toyota take these kinds of issues very seriously, and are working on a resolution to this problem with some urgency.

Copied from Toyota Owners Club:-

"A bulletin was issued today to dealers acknowledging the issue with 12v battery drain on NG Auris, the fault is related to a CAN communication error with the hazard warning switch as previously mentioned on this thread.

A fix of a software update for the CAN communication system is anticipated in early March ( not mentioned if this is an updated part or just a reprogramming of an existing part ).

In the meantime drivers experiencing issues can avoid them by fully pressing the hazard switch activating the hazards, then fully pressing the switch to deactivate the hazards, then exit the car as normal, this will have to be repeated at each exit until the repair is completed."

We have recently purchased a one year old Auris Hybrid and have a problem with the battery discharging overnight for no apparent reason.
Has anyone else got this problem or are aware of a fix?
I have contacted Toyota direct (28.5.14) but have so far got nowhere.
Can anyone help?

The present solution is to turn the hazard lights on and off prior to turning the engine off.

Suggest you read the third message above yours - seems your car hasn't had the software upgrade

Toyota Auris and Auris HSD 2013 - Flat 12 volt battery - Auristocrat

Toyota issued a repair bulletin to dealers on 20th May 2014. Those owners who have experienced the battery problem should contact their Toyota dealer and quote BE-0069T-0514, and the dealer will arrange for the car's software to be re-flashed.

Toyota has also notified dealers that any current generation Auris Hybrid built before the factory fix, would have the software re-flashed during routine servicing regardless of whether any issue has been reported.

The first generation Auris Hybrid is unaffected by this battery issue.

So I would suggest you take action os in the first paragrpah of this post.
