Replacing a Mondeo - what with?

Need a replacement for Mondeo 2.2 diesel, 100k brilliant miles but suspension now shot due to worsening state of UK roads and "traffic calmers"! Looking for rugged compliant suspension, high profile tyres, good mpg with lowest "tech spec". Any suggestions. I don't need a 4x4.

Most compliant suspension I have recently driven was in a Mk II Mazda 5 1.5d TS2 on Toyo J48 205/55/ R16 tyres. Looks like a bus, rides like a limo, handles better than a lot of sports cars.
