The Los Angeles Times reports that the average age of autos on the road has reached a record high. The average age of the 240.5 million cars and light trucks being driven in the U.S. rose to 10.8 years last year from 10.4 in the year before, according to R.L. Polk & Co., an automotive market research firm. The aging fleet is a result of slow new vehicle sales since 2008 and the reluctance of consumers to invest in new cars, analysts said. Automakers say this has created a latent demand for new vehicles that is just beginning to translate into more robust sales. Automakers sold 12.8 million vehicles last year, a 10.3% increase from 2010 and the most since 2008. They expect sales to reach about 13.8 million this year. The improving new vehicle market is expected to continue for several years and slow the aging rate seen in the U.S. fleet over the last three years, said Polk, which analyzes national vehicle registration data. In the meantime, the number of aged vehicles on the road should be good for some segments of the auto industry. “Dealer service departments and independent repair facilities, as well as aftermarket parts suppliers, will see increased business opportunity with customers in need of vehicle service,” said Mark Seng, global aftermarket practice leader at Polk. The average age of passenger cars rose to 11.1 years from 11 years at the end of June 2011, Polk said. The average age of pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles rose to 10.4 years from 10.1. Overall, average vehicle age has increased an entire year since 2006 and almost two years since 2000. George K tells us: "Most Americans drive an average of 12-15,000 miles per year. So 7 - 8 years to reach 100K miles. (Some diesel or other owners drive up to 20-50K miles per year). "U.S. drivers "expect" some number of smaller repair bills above and beyond "normal maintenance and wear" items during the ownership period -but hopefully not too many. "A few of these bills may be "relatively" high in the $2,000 - $4,000+ range - but they never expect more than one (if any), or at most two of them over an extended period of ownership with the expectation the vehicle will continue to provide service for at least 150 - 200++K miles if necessary. In the case of diesel vehicles, most owners "expect" their vehicles to last at least 200-300+K miles.....(or at least they did prior to 2009-2012 VW TDi vehicles that have suffered a spate of high pressure fuel pump failures)." In the USA, Consumer Protection laws help preserve cars by landing big bills on the manufacturers rather than the car owners. A typical example is diesel particulate filters. These must last at least 8 years or be replaced at the manufacturer's expense. BMW warrants its high pressure fuel pumps in the USA for ten years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. No such Consumer Protection in Europe where recently owners were faced with bills of up to £1,700 to replace ATE Teves Mk 60 ABS/ESP modules on cars as little as 3.5 years old due to a small fault with the ESP brake pressure valve. At the same time, component manufacturers were lobbying the EC to make ESP compulsory, and effectively legislate a potentially faulty component into every car. In fact, the fault can be repaired by specialists such as Sinspeed for as little as £225, including VAT. BMW always adopted the sensibly priced fix, often not charging its customers at all. But only when pressure was brought on another large German manufacturer did it relent and start using kits to fix the modules rather than charge customers up to £1,700. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/miscellaneous/2012-02/older-cars/ Peugeot facelifts Partner and Expert 69540 Sat, 04 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Peugeot has given the Partner and Expert vans a midlife facelift with a sharper look at the front, cleaner engines with lower CO2 emissions and the introduction of a new engine start/stop system. The Tepee people carrier versions of both models also get the improvements. The new models will be officially launched at the Geneva Motor Show next month before going on sale in the UK in mid March. As well as a new grille, bumper and bonnet at the front, both models now come with Euro 5 engines while the e-HDi models have the latest generation start/stop system. Peugeot is also claiming best in class CO2 figures for both vans with the Partner emitting just 123g/km (125g/km in the Partner Tepee). The larger Expert puts out 168g/km (172g/km for the Tepee model) with the 2.0 HDi model while the 163bhp version of the same engine is now available with a six-speed automatic gearbox. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/vans/2012-02/peugeot-facelifts-partner-and-expert/ Mercedes-Benz to launch new Citan van 69542 Sat, 04 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Mercedes-Benz has revealed that it will launch a new small van this autumn, called the Citan. Apparently the name comes from combining the words 'city' and 'titan' with Mercedes-Benz aiming to highlights that the van is designed for the 'rough and tumble of everyday working life'. The Citan is the first small van from the German firm, up till now the smallest commercial it sold was Vito. The Citan is designed more for urban use so you can expect good manouevrability and a tight turning circle. Mercedes-Benz is promising a high quality interior and the Citan has been developed and tested to the same standards as the excellent Sprinter and Vito. Impressively, ESP stability control comes as standard on all models. Details of engines have yet to be announced but as you'd expect, they will be efficient units with low CO2 figures and low fuel consumption. There will be both petrol and diesel models including a BlueEfficiency package for even lower running costs. Mercedes-Benz is already developing an electric version. There will be a wide choice of bodystyles too with the Citan available as a standard panel van as well as a crewbus or Mixto in various lengths and weight categories. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/vans/2012-02/mercedes-benz-to-launch-new-citan-van/ MINI launches Highgate special edition 69550 Sat, 04 Feb 2012 00:00:00 MINI has launched a new special edition model - the MINI Highgate Convertible. The name follows on from two special edition models from MINI last year - the Baker Street and the Bayswater. No sign of the MINI Old Kent Road yet though. The Highgate Convertible gets a new metallic paint colour called Iced Chocolate with a tailored 'Silvertouched Truffle' colour fabric roof. It also gets 'truffle' bonnet stripes with blue edging. Midnight Black metallic or White Silver metallic paintwork can be specified as an option while the door mirror caps are finished in the same shade as the exterior. Also unique to the MINI Highgate are 17-inch ‘Double Cross Turned’ light-alloy wheels in an aluminium colour. Apparently the design team took its inspiration for the spokes from the Union Jack flag. The brown theme continues inside with Dark Truffle Lounge Leather seats that have blue piping and contrasting stitching. The popular Chili Pack that includes automatic air conditioning, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, a multi-function steering wheel plus multi-coloured interior lights, is standard. The interior also gets Sun-touched Brushed Alloy detailing on the dashboard and the Chrome Line Interior and Exterior packages. Exclusive ‘Highgate’ lettering on the side indicator surrounds, door sills and seat tags marks the car out. The MINI Highgate is available with four engines: the MINI Cooper 122PS, MINI Cooper S (184PS), MINI Cooper D (112PS) and MINI Cooper SD (143PS). All comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a six-speed automatic is available as an option. There are two versions of the 2.0 TDIe - one with 136PS and a more powerful 163PS model. Both are available in the revised A5 Sportback with prices starting at £27,320 and £27,825 on the road respectively. The four-cylinder diesel engine gets a new, lighter flywheel to improve engine response at low revs which makes driving at low speeds, such as in traffic, smoother. The A5 Sportback 2.0 TDIe 136PS emits just 117g/km of CO2 which puts it in VED band C, currently £30 a year, while fuel economy is a claimed 64.2mpg on average. The more powerful 163PS version is only marginally behind with claimed economy of 62.8mpg and CO2 of 118g/km. It still ahs good performance though with a 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds. However, the cleanest of the new models is the A5 Coupe 2.0 TDIe 163PS which emits just 115g/km - an incredible low figure for a car this size, while claimed consumption is 64.2mpg. It costs from £28,775 on the road and like all the new models with the new 2.0 TDIe engine, has a six-speed manual gearbox. In addition to the new ‘e’ units the TDI range in the A5 Sportback continues to include 143PS and 177PS versions along with 3.0-litre TDI in two outputs of 204PS and 245PS, the latter coming with quattro all-wheel-drive as standard. The A5 Coupe is available with the 177PS 2.0-litre TDI and the two 3.0 TDI engines. Audi is also introducing a new SE Technik trim level on all four-cylinder TDI A5 Sportback and Coupe models. It costs £1000 more than the SE for the Sportback (£500 on the Coupe) and it addes DVD sat nav, the Audi Music Interface iPod connection, cruise control andAudi Parking Plus system with front and rear sensors. In both models SE specification already includes 17-inch alloy wheels, Milano leather upholstery, three-zone climate control, Bluetooth and a colour Driver’s Information System (DIS). Both TDIe engines are also available in Standard, SE and S line trim in the A5 Sportback, and Standard and SE in the Coupe. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/new-cars/2012-02/new-tdie-engines-for-audi-a5-models/ Bits For Older BMWs 69533 Fri, 03 Feb 2012 00:00:00 On 1 February 2012, BMW Classic Parts Supply launched its new online shop. Now customers can order spare parts for their BMW classics speedily, easily and from the comfort of their home. For BMW Classic the online shop represents “the next phase in the realignment of the business field and a further logical step towards customer satisfaction and customer-oriented service”, noted Ralf Vierlein, Head of Sales and Aftersales at BMW Group Classic. Customers can visit the online shop at http://shop.bmw-classic.de , search for appropriate spare parts for their classic vehicles and order them online. Furthermore, information is provided on the suitability of parts for various model ranges. This service is currently available for customers in Germany. Starting in April 2012 this service will be expanded to further European markets. The range of parts in the new online shop currently totals some 35,000 items for classic BMW cars and motorcycles dating from 1960 to around 1990. Large, heavy spare parts, dangerous goods and materials, electronic components and yard goods are excluded from the range. For customers, the online Parts Shop will not only make the search for spare parts much easier, it will also facilitate the replacement process: when a component is purchased, a BMW partner is automatically recommended to help the customer restore his or her classic vehicle and to provide technical support. The BMW Classic Parts Supply online shop will be presented for the first time at the Bremen Exhibition Centre during the Bremen Classic Motorshow, which takes place from 3 – 5 February 2012. Heather Peters - a Los Angeles resident - took Honda Motor Co to the small claims court when her car didn't live up to claimed figure of 50mpg (US gallons) and was often as low as 30mpg (US gallons). The court ruled that the owner had been misled by the figures and Honda was ordered to pay $9,867.19 in damages. That is close to the $10,000 maximium allowed in Amercian small claims courts. Honda plans to appeal and said in a statement: "American Honda believes that the judgment in this case is a radical and unprecedented departure from California and federal law," the automaker said in a statement. "The court stated in error that advertising EPA fuel economy estimates is misleading unless the advertising also explains the effects of stop-and-go driving and the use of air conditioning. In fact, federal law does not permit states or state courts to impose additional requirements of this kind," said Honda, which has offices in Torrance. "Thus, a Honda advertisement that accurately referenced EPA mileage estimates, truthfully stated that a driver can get 'up to 50 mpg' and carefully noted that mileage will vary is not misleading as a matter of law," This is only a small claims court judgement and may not stand up on appeal, but it is indicative of a growing sense of unease among owners that real life fuel consumption figures bear no relation to the official ones. Our Real Life Fuel Economy Register shown that many owners don't even come close to matching the official figures in 'real world' conditions. Honda Civic Hybrid is 48.4mpg in the register, compared to the official figure of 61.4mpg. Changes to the way that official fuel consumption tests are conducted are coming. Buried in a The European Transport White Paper last year was the paragraph below, which acknowledges that official figures differ from those achievable by real drivers on real roads (click on the image for the full report). http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/miscellaneous/2012-02/honda-civic-hybrid-owner-wins-fuel-economy-case-in-california/ Must See New Movie: a Car That Runs on Blood 69534 Fri, 03 Feb 2012 00:00:00 BLOOD CAR (Left Films). The award winning debut feature from director *Alex Orr*, the pitch-black comedy *Blood Car *mixes surrealist humour, sharp social commentary, kinky sex and buckets of blood to create “an absolutely hilarious satire that throws in South Park-type perversity and Evil Dead-style splatter while keeping its heart in the right place” (Total Sci-Fi Online). Winner of numerous awards, including the New Visions Award at the Cinequest Film Festival and the Best Narrative Feature Film awards at the Chicago Underground Film Festival and the Philadelphia First Glance Film Festival, and starring *Anna Chlumsky*(best known for her charming starring role in My Girl two decades ago), *Mike Brune* (Van Wilder: Freshman Year) and *Katie Rowlett* (her feature debut), *Blood Car* is an independent horror-comedy gem that fully deserves to be rewarded with the cult status accorded to the films of Roger Corman, Frank Henenlotter, John Waters and Russ Meyer. It is the very near future and global petrol prices have rocketed so high that the average person can no longer afford to drive. A geeky vegan, Archie Andrews (Brune) is a primary schoolteacher by profession but spends his spare hours trying to develop an engine that can run on the wheatgrass he buys from local stallholder, Lorraine (Chlumsky). During his research, Archie accidentally discovers that his latest prototype engine runs most efficiently not on wheatgrass but on human blood. Unique to the Northamptonshire circuit, the adrenaline-fuelled track day, is being launched on Saturday, March 24, and offers participants one of the best priced track day experiences on the market. The track day not only incorporate the 1.94-mile International Super Sportscar Circuit (ISSC) with its technically challenging infield section, but also offers sessions on both Rockingham’s banked-oval and its state-of-the-art Wet Grip area. All three track configurations offer a total unique experience – it’s all about speed on Europe’s fastest motor racing circuit and the UK’s only banked-oval; the Wet Grip hones your handling skills on its low grip road surface while the ISSC will perfect overall technique. Rockingham Events Co-ordinator, Will Thomas, said: “Track days are popular at all circuits, however we wanted to offer a product which is totally unique at Rockingham and enable drivers to get the most from their experience. “By incorporating all three circuits, drivers have to master a range of driving techniques and learn new skills. Our track days are perfect for those who are passionate about their cars to meet other likeminded people in a fun and informal environment.” Whether a complete novice or seasoned veteran, participants will receive a full safety briefing, covering everything from rules of the event, through to car preparation, driving techniques, circuit information and familiarisation laps. One of Rockingham’s experienced instructors will be on hand throughout the event to provide the lowdown on the best racing lines and techniques before participants put theory into practice on track. The track day will operate as an open pit lane, which offers participants the flexibility to drive the circuit as much as they would please. The event will run from 9am to 5pm and includes full medical and safety cover and costs just £195. There is the option to bring one additional driver free of charge – providing the opportunity to share both the experience as well as the cost. There is also a special discount rate available to car club members when booking as a group. Pit garages, one-to-one tuition and helmet hire is also available at an additional cost, for more information contact Will Thomas on 01536 270143. Alternatively places can be booked on-line at www.rockingham.co.uk . Rockingham has also launched taster sessions which are an ideal opportunity for those drivers to sample and experience what a track day is like. The 60-minute sessions, which provides around 20 minutes of real track time on the ISSC, free helmet hire and a full safety briefing, cost just £30 and are held during the lunch break. After sampling the track day drivers decide to take part in a full day, Rockingham will deduct the cost of the taster session from the price. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/events/2012-02/3-in-1-track-days/ New Toyota GT 86 sports car to cost just £24,995 69529 Fri, 03 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Toyota has confirmed that the new Toyota GT 86 will cost just £24,995 when it goes on sale this summer. The new two-seater sports car is the sister model to the Subaru BRZ . Unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, the GT 86 is built on a new platform and has been designed as a driver focussed car with a light kerbweight, free-revving engine and responsive steering. Rather than fitting a large capacity or turbocharged engine, Toyota has gone for naturally aspirated engine. The 2.0-litre develops 197bhp at 7000rpm with maximum torque of 205Nm to 6600rpm. Toyota has added its D-4S injection technology to the Subaru naturally aspirated boxer engine. This system features separate twin injectors, increasing power and torque across a wide range of engine speeds . It's fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard while a six-speed automatic is an option. The GT 86 also gets a limited slip differential to give the best possible grip while the stability control system can be set to intervene later during more dynamic driving. While £24,995 is the entry-level price, further pricing and specification details will be announced nearer the time of launch in June 2012. Advanced orders are being taken for the GT 86, with many UK customers already signed up. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/new-cars/2012-02/new-toyota-gt-86-sports-car-to-cost-just-gbp24995/ Jaguar Heritage Museum to close 69509 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:00:00 The Jaguar Heritage Museum in Coventry is scheduled to close its doors in September 2012, but Jaguar is explains that the “long-term vision,” is to, eventually, create a new Heritage Museum, although further details have not been disclosed. In the short-term, staff from the museum will relocate to new premises near to Jaguar Land Rover’s headquarters in Whitey, Coventry. Jaguar will retain the collection of vehicles from the museum and has plans to display them at various events over the course of 2012. The current museum houses important vehicles from the Jaguar’s past, as well as from related marques like Lanchester. It’s located on Brown’s Lane, which was Jaguar’s home until 2005. So with no firm plans for a new Jaguar Heritage Museum, Jaguar aficionados have just a few more months to see the collection at its spiritual home. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/miscellaneous/2012-02/jaguar’s-heritage-museum-to-close/ Personal plate sells for £80,000 69506 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:00:00 At a recent DVLA personalised number plate auction a mystery business man purchased the number plate ‘DH11 LON’ for a staggering £79,136 – and they say we’re in a recession! Jody Davies, DVLA Personalised Registrations’ Events Manager, said: “What a way to start our 2012 programme? We were hopeful DH11 LON would create some interest, but no one predicted it would fetch such a high figure. We are delighted, of course, but a little stunned.” The number plate was expected to garner some interest, but with a reserve of £2000 it wasn’t expected to come close to its final price. It was clear the reserve was to be smashed when a bidding war started at £12,600. The final hammer price was £61,000, but after taxes and fees it rose to £79,100. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/auctions/2012-02/personal-plate-sells-for-gbp80000/ Easter Bank Holiday HRDC Racing at Castle Combe 69494 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Early entries for grid slots at the HRDC 'Historica' Festival - which will be held on the traditional Easter Bank Holiday Monday race meeting date (9 April) at Castle Combe - have been flooding into the HRDC Race HQ in Leamington Spa. HRDC's Race Director, Julius Thurgood, commented: "The response from competitors to this Easter Monday Castle Combe meeting has been amazing, especially so early in the year. This is probably due to the reputation earned by the HRDC last season for fielding full grids and the fact that this particular date at Castle Combe has been so well established over the years; it is considered a 'must-do' event in the historic racing diary. Certainly Howard Strawford's team at Castle Combe add a 'feel-good' factor to everything that they do at this historic venue. There is also the added factor of the value for money entry fee system operated by the HRDC - £395 for 70 minutes of track time is a really good deal in the historic sector." Le Mans ace, Darren Turner, was one of the first competitors to sign-up for Castle Combe. He will be partnering James Turner in the ex-Adam Gittings Ford Zodiac Mk2 which the pair bought early last year. Currently being fettled by Shaun Rainford's team at CCK Historic, this well-known racer is set for a full season of HRDC 'Touring Greats'. No doubt this will be a series front-runner. Looking to keep the Ford pairing honest will be Goodwood ace, Rae Davis, in his diminutive Austin A35 - "I'm looking forward to giving all the big cars a real run for their money at Castle Combe - I can't wait to get out there!" The HRDC 'MGB50' is set to bring a big grid of FIA historic 'B' racers - along with several works cars including the 1965 Le Mans car, which will be pedalled with verve by Barry 'Sideways' Smith. :: HRDC 'GTS65' will see a great range of larger-capacity historic GTs run in a long-distance format. Keith Ahlers is entered in his fabulous Morgan Plus 4 SLR; 'Whizzo' Williams will be partnering Richard Frankel in the ex-Scuderia Filipinetti Porsche 904/6. :: A strong grid of HRDC 'Grand Touring Greats' small-bore GTs is expected. Mike Youles will be looking for a win with his rare Rochdale Olympic, after a great debut last year at Snetterton. Ian Burford will debut the freshly restored 'Lumbertubs' Sprite. :: HRDC 'TC63' ran an impressive grid for the first time at Snetterton back in October. Paul Clayson hopes to debut the recently re-discovered ex-Chris Lawrence, Zolder-winning, Blydenstein Vauxhall VX4/90. Tony Murray will again be out with his gorgeous Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint. HRDC RACES AT CASTLE COMBE ON 9 APRIL HRDC 'Touring Greats' for pre-'60 historic touring cars and XK Jaguars (45 mins race/25 mins practice); HRDC 'Grand Touring Greats' for pre-'66, sub-1500cc historic GT cars (30 mins race/15 mins practice); HRDC 'GTS65' for pre-'66, over-1500cc historic GT cars (45 mins race/25 mins practice); HRDC 'TC63' for pre-'64, historic touring cars (30 mins race/15 mins practice); HRDC 'MGB50' for FIA pre-'66 MGB cars (30 mins race/15 mins practice). Entries and registration to HRDC (no registration fee) can be made via www.hrdc.eu . http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/events/2012-02/hrdc-combe-9th-april/ Citroen facelifts Berlingo and Dispatch 69498 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Citroen has facelifted both the Berlingo Multispace and Dispatch Combi with exterior styling tweaks and equipment upgrades. The new model gets 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and privacy glass, while inside there are heated front seats, a leather covered steering wheel and gear shift, plus cruise control and rear parking sensors. The latest addition to the Korando range is priced from £17,995 on the road and like the rest of the SsangYong range, comes with an impressive five year unlimited mileage warranty. It is available in Grand White as standard, plus metallic Vitamin Red or Space Black. Power comes from the 175PS 2.0-litre diesel engine which develops 360Nm of torque with CO2 emissions of 157g/km. The LE has the same mechanical specification as the two wheel drive Korando S. The Korando LE is also available with a low interest finance offer at £259 a month, which also includes five years free servicing. The offer allows for one service per year and an annual mileage of up to 12,500 miles. The five years free servicing is also available on all Korando models purchased with the finance offer during February and March. The Korando LE finance offer is available throughout February and March from participating SsangYong dealers. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/new-cars/2012-02/ssangyong-launches-special-edition-korando/ Volkswagen's new chassis explained 69504 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Volkswagen will introduce a new chassis this year - codenamed the MQB (it's short for Modularer Querbaukasten if you're interested). Not very interesting you'd think. But this new modular platform will form the basis of a huge number of new models from Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and also Skoda. It will be used first in the new Audi A3 which is set to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March and will be launched in the UK in May this year. The new platform will also form the base for the new generation Volkswagen Golf. In fact it's so versatile it could be used on future versions of everything from the Volkswagen Polo (and A1, Ibiza and Fabia) to the Beetle, Scirocco, Touran, Passat and the Volkswagen CC , despite the different wheelbases and lengths. So what's so special about it? Well it represents a big change in the design and production of cars with transverse-mounted engines - this is the set up that the vast majority of modern front-wheel drive cars have. The fact it's a modular platform means that models that use it can be built together - even if they're difference brands. This means that in theory models as diverse as the Volkswagen Polo, Audi A3 and SEAT Alhambra could be built at the same plant. The MQB chassis has the engine positioned in the same place, regardless of what model it is the base for. There's also a modular engine system which uses a variety of petrol and diesel units ranging from 60PS to 190PS and includes the first four-cylinder engine with cylinder deactivation, first seen on the Audi A1 1.4 TSI we recently drove . So in one fell swoop, the new engine series will reduce the Group’s engine and gearbox variants in the MQB system by approximately 90 per cent. This means lower production costs which should (hopefully) mean lower prices for customers. As well as standardising the engine and gearboxes, the MQB has also been designed to take all the concept engines Volkswagen is working on, from natural gas and hybrids to electric drive. This will be seen in 2013 with the launch of the new Volkswagen Golf Blue-e-Motion. Another advantage of the new MQB platform is a reduction in weight while Volkswagen is promising 20 innovations in safety and infotainment which up till now have only been seen on larger and more expensive cars. These include a new multicollision brake system. After an initial collision, this helps to reduce the intensity of secondary collisions by automatically initiating braking. Very recently, the ADAC (the German version of the AA) awarded this system the ‘Yellow Angel’ award for innovations and it will be standard equipment in the next generations of the Audi A3 and the Golf. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/new-cars/2012-02/volkswagens-new-chassis-explained/ Geneva Motor Show 2012: Fiat to premiere five-door Fiat 500 69495 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Fiat is to premiere a new ‘L’ or 'Large' version of its popular 500 city car at Geneva. The L offers five-door practicality while retaining the cute retro styling that’s made the two-door 500 so popular since its launch in 2008. The first pictures show a small-MPV style vehicle which is both taller and longer than the two-door, with a square rear end - pointing at a more practical and spacious rear row of seats. These first pictures were released by Fiat International, but further details are sparse. TwinAir two-cylinder petrol engines, as well as a 1.4-litre petrol and 1.3 MultiJet diesel engines will be offered, and with constant strives towards improved fuel economy you can expect the 500L to have stop/start technology. The original Fiat 500L was a ‘Lusso,’ or Luxury model. The larger, more practical variant of the original Fiat 500 was called the 500K, and looked like a traditional estate. You can expect more solid details nearer the 500L’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show . It's to go into production and will be on sale in Europe in late 2012. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/motorshows/geneva-motor-show-2012/geneva-motor-show-2012-fiat-to-premiere-five-door-fiat-500/ Geneva Motor Show 2012: Infiniti to show Emerg-e concept 69502 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Infiniti has announced its new sports car concept is to be called the Emerg-e. As the stray 'e' on the end of the name suggests, the concept is an electric car and will be seen officially for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012. The Infiniti Emerg-e will be the first car from the Japanese brand to have a range-extender drivetrain designed to offer strong performance with zero emissions capability. The motor will also one mounted in the middle of the car for optimal handling. Infiniti currently builds a hybrid car - the M35h - but the rest of the range has standard petrol or diesel engines. Infiniti says the new car will 'minimise the traditional compromise between performance and sustainable mobility', but we'll have to wait until the official unveiling before we find out any more. The event will also be transmitted live via Infiniti’s European website: www.infiniti.eu http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/motorshows/geneva-motor-show-2012/geneva-motor-show-2012-infiniti-to-show-emerg-e-concept/ New unlimited mileage warranty for Fiat Doblo 69508 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Fiat Professional is improving the warranty on its Doblo Cargo and Doblo Combi ranges to cover unlimited mileage over three years. The frequency of the MoT test will remain unchanged, though, despite previous proposals to change it from annually to bi-annually. According to the DfT’s statement, 27.7% of vehicles tested in 2010-2011 had one or more defects missed or incorrectly identified by test centres, and that one-in-eight cars had their roadworthiness incorrectly assessed. In response to these figures the government is to work with the industry, with motoring organisations, and with consumer groups to focus on the reliability standards of garages. The DfT aims to: Retain the existing rules on MOT test frequency since the evidence shows that vehicle defects are being missed and roadworthiness mis-assessed. Shine a light on the performance of MOT testing stations by releasing hitherto unpublished VOSA survey data on whether the sector is complying with test standards. Work with motoring organisations to find out what problems motorists experience and enable them to share examples of good customer service – in particular to find ways to make it easier for customers to give feedback on their experiences of garages in a way that others can see – much like the Honest John Good Garage Guide . Encourage the take up of industry codes of practice – and expand them to include MOT testing – so that customers can find garages signed up to schemes delivering the highest standards and take action if they have not received the service they expect. Help motorists to spot “clocked” second hand vehicles, by changing MOT certificates so that they carry the last three years’ mileage information as well as the mileage on the day of the test, and encourage car buyers to check full MOT histories using the online MOT database. Arrange “mystery shopper” tests to help improve performance in addition to those already carried out by VOSA. Transport Secretary Justine Greening said: “Our garages are crucial to ensuring that Britain’s roads continue to be among the safest in the world. Most are doing good work but the latest data shows that there is room for improvement. "I want each motorist to be confident that a visit to the garage ends with their car repaired to a high standard by reputable mechanics rather than uncertainty about cost and the quality of service. “Giving drivers the very best information about garage performance is absolutely key to achieving this goal. It means that responsible garages will be well placed to reap the commercial benefits of transparency. Garages where performance is not up to scratch will find themselves under pressure to do more for their customers.” If you’re looking for a good, reliable garage you can find reader recommended MoT centres, tyre fitters and dealerships in your local area in the Honest John Good Garage Guide , and you can also submit your own recommendations. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/miscellaneous/2012-02/dft-plans-to-improve-mot-test-reliability/ Nissan launches top of the range Juke 69474 Wed, 01 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Nissan has introduced a new top of the range Juke - the Shiro. The new model replaces the Kuro, which is Japanese for black, so you won't be surprised to find out that Shiro means white. Despite the name it's actually available in all the usual Juke colours as well as a new colour called Nightshade. Prices start at £17,695. Inside it has a host of white details, so you know it's a Shiro, which Nissan describes as 'tasteful'. The odd centre console, which was inspired by a motorbike fuel tank, is finished in white as are the door panels and the bits around the electric window switches. There's also white stitching on the leather steering wheel, gear lever surround and on the edges of the leather seats. The seats also have a double layer fabric with a white background visible through the perforated leather. If that wasn't enough there's also a leather covered centre armrest, with - you guessed it - white stitching plus illuminated chrome-plated door sills. On the outside the Shiro gets dark grey 17-inch alloys, satin silver door handles and mirrors. The Shiro is based on the Tekna trim and is available with three engines - a 110PS 1.5-litre dCi and a 117PS 1.6-litre petrol along with the turbocharged 1.6-litre DIG-T with 190PS. A 4x4 version and CVT automatics are also available. Deliveries are due to start in March. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/new-cars/2012-02/nissan-launches-top-of-the-range-juke/ Smart facelifts ForTwo 69482 Wed, 01 Feb 2012 00:00:00 Smart has given the ForTwo a facelift for 2012 with a refreshed look and an upgraded interior.
