That's an interesting view. What have they been "caught" doing?

There is a dual carriageway by-pass near me, that looks a dead cert to be 40mph, but it's 30mph. By your logic I shouldn't be prosecuted for doing more than 30mph.

Don't think I'll put your theory to the test though.

Indeed you would need to be there to know!

But in my defence I would say that I am above average trained, being a class 1 hgv holder, full bike licence holder and was also trained as a driving assessor to advanced driving standards. So whilst I fully admit I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, I am very aware of what is going on around me, so for me to have to brake heavily meant he did something I really was not expecting by any stretch of the imagination!

ESC/ESP as a legal requirement. I knew I'd seen it said somewhere.

"The European Commission has confirmed a proposal for the mandatory introduction of ESC on all new cars and commercial vehicle models sold in the EU from 2012, with all new cars being equipped by 2014"

Thank to Wiki.

Technical matters: 02 1.8 TDCi glow-plug warning light problem (arnold2)

OK,
My local garage (non-Ford) has been trying to sort out a problem on my TDCi Focus - namely glow-plug light coming on/engine cutting out.

The fault codes are p1200 - injector/wiring/ecu, and p0251, wiring/injector pump/ecu.

They have tested the Turbo - OK, injectors, again OK, and pump, ok. Also wiring & hoses OK, but a bit warn - done 190k.

So, any ideas anyone! What has happened now since being in the garage was what looked like an oil leak (under engine), but checking the dip-stick all OK, so seems to be when engine on. Could they have not re-connected something related to the injectors properly, or would the engine then just die? Back to garage on Monday but am thinking of going to Ford!

Only other thing I can find is the possibility of a faulty sensor on the throttle switch?
Help!

AFAICS, this is a legal technicality. It seems that the road looked to the driver like any other 30mph road, so an observant driver would have slowed down.

It's disappointing that the council screwed up its order, but it doesn't give me much sympathy for any drivers caught. They will now be lucky enough to get off, but I can't see that they have grounds to regard their escape as anything other than a lucky bonus.

In the hope that some senior car company executives read this

I know that we buyers always want more and more for less and less … but, you very nice, very helpful people, this would be a way to improve customer service / satisfaction pretty cheaply.

With apologies to any firms that are already doing this - in recent years I have only really looked at Ford and Fiat user handbooks -

Please only put into the handboook the stuff for the car in question

If I’ve got a petrol 1.6 with such and such tyres and dashboard don’t make me look at two dashboard layouts, three specifications of engine oil, five sizes of tyres. Spare me a lecture on diesel technicalities and the stuff about how to get at the spare wheel on the estate. Don’t make me have to flick through the bit about how the cabriolet roof works. I don't want to examine all the car entertainment options for the small details that distinguish mine. Cars are filling up with such a lot of kit that we can do without extra hassle.

If I do later buy an mp3 player, a satnav or some fancier wheels off you, supply inserts for the manual with them at the time.

It would be a bit of fuss to sort this, but it shouldn’t be that hard in this age of bar codes and databases, where everything is computerised already.

As well as user satisfaction it would save on some paper to help your green PR. And add to safety - I don’t want to shock you but I suspect that there are people out there who haven’t taken in every detail of their car’s handbook - make it easier for them.

>> the 6 letter expletive to describe R75's driving (mimser). ;-)

You misjudge me jbif. From R75's account he wasn't mimsing but driving at the legal limit without a queue of eager beavers behind him. That seems OK to me. It is economical motorway driving. Of course people who hog the outer lane when others want to get past are another matter.

The only doubtful area is his claim that he was forced to brake sharply by the other car. He may have been of course. On the other hand one often sees people overreacting to other drivers in a Double-Take Brothers sort of way. I see no reason to suppose R75 was doing that though. One would have to be there to know.

Discussion: Stopping brake discs rusting (Dave N)

I'm laying it up for the winter in the garage. Is there anything I can coat the discs with to stop them rusting?

I remember many years ago I bought a carcoon for the bike. It never worked by the way - corrosion and mould everythwere. But anyway, with it came an aerosol of rust prevention stuff, and on the label it said can be used on brake discs without affecting anything when it came to driving it again. Anyone know what it was, or what I can use instead?

Discussion: After DRLs - other legal must haves? (NowWheels)

>> Legislated or potentially legislated additions to modern motors are a disaster zone and simply lead
>> to more expensive failures.

I think that may be a little simplistic. Catalytic converters seem to be reasonably robust, and they were adopted on a widescale due to legislation in the USA in the late 70s and early 80s, followed by later EU rules (early 90s, IIRC).

ABS is AFAIK a legal requirement nowadays, but it seems to be fairly reliable.

However, both of those technologies were in use for a long time before becoming compulsory: catalytic converters were invented in 1950, and ABS was deployed selectively for about 15 years before becoming universal.

I was going to suggest that maybe the successful technologies were those which were rolled out slowly, being debugged through experience in small market segments and going through several iterations before hitting the mass market. Many of the things we now take for granted on cars followed that path, such as heated rear windows, dual-circuit brakes, windscreen wipers, cooling-system-powered heaters, aircon, seatbelts, radial tyres and electric turn indicators. (My father's first car, a 1948 model, had wipers, but nothing else on the list).

However, ESP seems to contradict that, because we don't yet have any legal requirements in force for its fitting, but it's on your list of problematic technologies. Could it be that the market is also capable of pushing makers to deploy inadequately-developed technologies? Common-rail diesels seem to be an example of a market-driven failure, not a legislated one -- VW only adopted CR diesels very recently, so they haven't been essential as a way of meeting emission regs, yet they still have reliability problems.

In general, I prefer legislation which sets goals to be achieved rather than requiring specific solutions. It's notable that the current pressure for low emissions is being met by a whole variety of techniques, including stop-start engines, improved aerodynamics, tweaked engine management, lighter structures, etc. However in some cases, legislation which seeks big improvements seems to produce complex solutions rather than better design.

The current pressure on C02 emissions is producing some good results (e.g. lighter and more aerodynamic car bodies), but also some messier ones such as hybrid powertrains, the stop/start devices (risks nasty engine wear), lower ride heights (which increases the risk of underbody damage), and highly-stressed supercharged engines. It'll be interesting to see how this sort of issue plays out in time. Will we see makers backing away from complex solutions such as those, and instead use composite materials to reduce the weight of vehicles?

In 5 years time I think there will be more hybrids. Hybrid drive might take over from the torque-converter epicyclic gearbox as the preferred form of two-pedal motoring.

Also more pure electric cars and, in particular, electric delivery vans in large conurbations.

As for legal requirents.....

I'm a fan of daytime running lights although our old bangers don't have them. The Mark 6 VW Golf looks cool with its DRLs on, though that couldn't be said of the old Volvo ones! I can also see cars being fitted with speed limiters in the way that LGVs and coaches are now.

Discussion: bypassing immobiliser - is it possible (martint123)

Depending on age, immobilisers are built in to the whole vehicle electrics rather than an obvious addon box. Some even need a hugely expensive ECU replacement if the master key is lost.
I wouldn't be happy if it could be easily bypassed with fiddling with a relay.

Technical matters: 98 1275 High HC PPM at MOT (Chris S)

I've just put my Micra through the MOT - the HC was near the 200 PPM limit.

All the other emissions figures were well withing limits.

Does anyone know what caused the high HC PPM?

Can it be fixed or should I start looking for another car when the next MOT approaches?

I have to say I use the Halfords concentrate on their 3 for 2 offer. I can't imagine why people buy the ready mix - it is only a bit cheaper than the concentrate. I use about 1 in 20 before it gets cold and then up to 1 in 4 in the winter.

>> I ... was actually overtaking a line of traffic at the time, they were doing about 60mph, so plenty fast enough, also, no one was behind me!!! >>

1. Yet the "impersonating Police Officer" was able to get ahead of the line of traffic to get in fron of you!

2. You had no one behind you!

3. middle lane hoggers were doing 60, while your speed was 70 or so.

Classic lane 3 hog, methinks. ;-)

Whatever you use for washer anti freeze try and get into Lidl's when they've got W5 concentrated screenwash in stock.

A capful in your washer bottle will see the end of those smeary screens we so hate.

As an aside i make a bucketful up and wash the house windows (after doing the car screen proper like) with it using the car washing brush, a quick rinse off followed by squeeqee and they come up sparkling like new...as usual with Lidl's stuff it's good.

Don't you just love assumptions!!

No I was not lane hogging, was actually overtaking a line of traffic at the time, they were doing about 60mph, so plenty fast enough, also, no one was behind me!!!

As for the lights, they were not maplin esque, they were proper blue strobes, twin flashing about 6 inches high and 18" accross. The driver was in his 40's with a moustache!!

As for did I get enough o report him, yes I did, vehicle details and reg number as well as time, location and the exit he got off at!!

As for impeding an emergency vehicle, his lights were not flashing before the event took place, he flashed them for about 5-10 seconds after the event then turned them off again. I suppose he was doing it to intimidate me, it didnt work!!!!

My point is, if he did it to me, after an appalling piece of his driving then how many other people is he doing it to!!! Makes a mockery of emergency vehicles!!

Another advantage of fitting a complete housing, at least from the trade's point of view, is there's no wasted time cleaning up the mating surface and having to use tons of sealant.

I don't understand this - If you remove the housing you still have to clean up the mating surface and use new sealant ?
Changing the stat took 10 seconds, once the housing was off and 10 seconds to fit the new one (just twists in). My part, once sourced from the Net,was collected from the Factors,in a box with a removal/refitting tube,a sachet of rubber grease and three 'O' rings. And full comprehensive instructions.

Bargain in my book !

It sums up just how much better cars are made now

Not really - with the greatest respect to all the dewy eyed memories of Ladas - they were made in Russia, the Soviet Russians lacked the capability to invest in proper R&D and they didn't care about the customer. European and Japanese cars of that era were light years ahead.

It's a good feeling saving money and one I like myself!

One thing to bear in mind though with buying off internet is what quality are you getting. I'd be very happy with QH, but if the part just came in a plastic bag, you may have wasted time fitting a part that was little better than the old one.

Another advantage of fitting a complete housing, at least from the trade's point of view, is there's no wasted time cleaning up the mating surface and having to use tons of sealant.

get him insured on something so he can see what driving is like on your own...i had one lesson on a motorway and then went on the biggest road trip i could afford just to get the experience.....the direct line ncb for named drivers actually worked out very well for me and i got pretty much the same discount if i remember correctly though now with the 2.0l focus all savings have pretty much gone lol he will think he is the best driver...i did until i managed to spin the car in the wet as i was going way to fast and almost getting hit by a tractor mid spin...... though i now have so much more respect for cars and the dangers.
