Superminis
1
Good: Chic and sporty looks plus a classy interior. Enjoyable to drive. Efficient chain cam petrol engines, plenty of scope for personalisation. Well equipped. 99g/km 1.6 TDI from 2011.
Bad: Efficient and pleasant but not overtly sporty.
2
Good: Classy and stylish. Well built with an upmarket interior. Frugal 1.6 TDCI. Enjoyable and involving to drive. Relaxed at motorway speeds. Cheap to run ECOnetic model.
Bad: Back seats don't fold flat. Spare wheel is a £30 optional extra. High boot lip. More refined but not as sharp to drive as a Mazda 2.
3
Good: Neatly styled and easy to drive. Room for five. Most come with full size spare. High quality interior. Double folding rear seats give flat load area. Amazingly frugal 1.2 TDI BlueMotion.
Bad: Lacks the sparkle of other small hatches. High gearing of 1.6 TDI may lead to DPF problems. 1.6 TDI and 1.4 petrol still belt cam.
4
Good: Neatly styled. Increased room and better performance than original Jazz. More fun to drive. Very versatile. CVT-7 returned in February 2011 replacing i-SHIFT.
Bad: Six-speed i-SHIFT automated manual disliked and did not bring Jazz under 120g/km CO2. Gearbox bearing problems on manual.
5
Good: Easy to drive and refined. Very well built. Five-year warranty as standard. Neat and tidy styling. Decent room in the back seat. Good economy from entry-level 1.2-litre.
Bad: Lacks character. Base models feel a little sparse and cheap inside. Seats lack long-distance comfort.
6
Good: Clean petrol engine and cheap road tax. Economical. Well equipped. Five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. Swift Sport is great fun. Swift Attitude adds street cred without insurance hikes.
Bad: Four-speed auto saps power. UK models do not have fuel-saving stop-start technology (despite it being available elsewhere).
7
Good: Solid, stylish-looking and decently equipped supermini. Decent handling and some strong, frugal engines.
Bad: Numb, overly light steering. Boot too narrow for standard size pushchair. Dash reflects in screen.
8
Good: Refined and high quality interior. Great 1.6 THP 150 petrol engine with six-speed gearbox gives 40-45mpg. 99g/km 1.6 diesel. Good value for money. Handles really well. Strong rival to Audi A1.
Bad: Makes you wonder why all Citroens can't be this good.
9
Good: Decently built and good value, cheap to run. Greenline models are very economical with low CO2 emissions.
Bad: Dull image, smaller 1.2-litre petrol engine is lacklustre, not exciting to drive.
10
Good: Low emissions and fuel consumption from 1.2-litre engine, roomy and seats five, decent value for money, Bluetooth as standard.
Bad: Lags behind most other small hatchbacks, not as much hip and shoulder room as headroom, interior feels cheap in places, unexciting to drive, air con not standard on Visia.
