Small hatchbacks
1
Good: Excellent small car for the money, high quality and neatly designed interior, spacious, great to drive, cheap to run, one of the best small cars around.
Bad: Noisy on the motorway, three-door 'Halo' automatic is pricey at £12,295.
2
Good: The best very small car around. Cheap to own. All models have aircon, five seatbelts and flat folding rear seats. Rides and handles quite well for its size. 99g/km Blue model from early 2011.
Bad: Clutch and headlight adjustor motor problems took a long time for Hyundai to solve. 1.1-litre best avoided.
3
Good: Fun to drive and economical, based on the FIAT 500 but handles so much better it donated its suspension improvements to the 500. More room in rear than 500.
Bad: Diesel engine not worth the extra. Doesn't have character or cachet of 500. Never got TwinAir engine.
4
Good: SEAT version of Volkswagen Up, powered by low emission 1.0-litre engine. One version emits below 100g/km CO2. Easy and fun to drive. Good value for money.
Bad: Not as distinctively styled as the Up and only £150 cheaper.
5
Good: Funky looks and desirable image. Faithful to original. Easy and fun to drive. TwinAir engine from November 2010 emits just 95g/km. Better suspension from 2010.
Bad: Built to order and no discounts. Choppy ride and handling before 2010 suspension improvements. Extras add up.
6
Good: Compact and practical, enjoyable and easy to drive, narrow size makes it easy to park, good space for those in the back.
Bad: Double folding rear seats not standard, small boot.
7
Good: Low road tax and insurance, 60mpg, cheap to run and drives decently. 99g/km CO2 from 2012.
Bad: Doors feel flimsy. Reports of water leaks.
8
Good: Enjoyable and easy to drive. Easy to get in and out of. Peppy, chain cam engines. Good rear space. Best ride quality of any car its size.
Bad: Entry level models on small wheels don't look great.
9
Good: Triumph of 4-seater packaging 9' 10" long that still earned 5 NCAP stars. 99g/km so VED free. Better to drive than a Smart, or a FIAT 500.
Bad: Quite wide for a city car. Not cheap. CVT auto over 100g/km.
10
Good: Small, tall 5-door city car clone of Vauxhall Agila. Makes best sense in 1.0 petrol and 1.3 diesel low emission versions. High seats. Excellent rear seat folding mechanism.
Bad: Okay, but no better than a Hyundai i10, yet costs more and has a shorter warranty. Essential to replace brake fluid every 2 years.
