Off roaders and SUVs

1
Good: Huge improvement on original Freelander, excellent 2.2-litre belt cam diesel, incredibly good off-road, robust interior, more efficient 2WD model introduced in 2011.
Bad: Not as sharp on the road as other 4x4s, diesel automatic is thirsty.
2
Good: Refined and practical. Impressive rear passenger space and decent boot. Good economy from 2.0 TDI. Chain cam 2.0 TFSI. Smooth long distance comfort. Carries more prestige worldwide than BMW X3.
Bad: Optional extras can add tens of thousands, making used examples difficult to price.
3
Good: Strong diesels including impressive new 2.2-litre engine, comes with seven seats, new six-speed automatic available, centre diff lock means it's very capable off-road, much more premium feel than previous Sorento, great value for money.
Bad: Entry level model is two-wheel drive only and five seats, 4WD automatic models only tow 2,000kg.
4
Good: Now has the 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine it really needed, still unstoppable off-road, classy image, refined and high-quality interior, more power and lower emissions from 2012.
Bad: Prices creeping up to Mercedes GL levels, other 4x4s this size are better on road.
5
Good: Refined and sophisticated cabin, strong but economical 3.0 TDI engine, feels well built and robust, handles impressively well for a large 4x4.
Bad: Not available with seven seats, hybrid version refined but not as punchy as the diesels.
6
Good: Refined and cossetting. Strong performance from hybrid powerplant. Superbly engineered and well built. Low CO2 for a large 4x4 along with good fuel economy.
Bad: Not very involving to drive. Bland interior lacks the style of other premium SUVs. Ride can be unsettled.
7
Good: Very comfortable and refined, makes for a good long distance car, stylish cabin, R Design models look sporty, low emissions DRIVe versions available, very safe.
Bad: D5 diesel is starting to feel dated, Geartronic automatic can be sluggish too.
8
Good: Low CO2 of 2.0 diesel thanks to start-stop system. Bigger and much better than previous X3. Good quality cabin. Comfortable ride. 6 cylinder engine option from mid 2011.
Bad: Stop start does not work below three degrees centigrade. Originally best in class meant a long waiting list. Main rival: Audi Q5.
9
Good: Bold and chunky styling, excellent 3.0 CRD diesel engine, superbly capable off-road, well equipped as standard, good-sized boot, great for towing.
Bad: Overly light steering and bouncy ride, interior let down by some cheap-feeling plastics, not available with seven seats like many other 4x4s.
10
Good: Unstoppable off-road, very highly kitted out as standard, superbly engineered and robust.
Bad: More expensive new than a Range Rover and nowhere near as good, doesn't feel very upmarket considering the price, wallowy on the road, generic looks inside and out.
