Medium family
1
Good: Refined, upmarket feel to the cabin. Comfortable and quiet on the move. More efficient petrol and diesel engines. Better ride quality. Excellent £750 Driver Assist Pack, good standard equipment.
Bad: About 50 litres less bootspace than previous model. Engines all still belt cam.
2
Good: Comfortable and quiet on the move, enjoyable to drive, great attention to detail, excellent chain cam 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrol engines, economical BlueMotion models.
Bad: Styling not a huge leap forward from the previous Golf, DSG transmission occasionally obstructive and can leave you stranded mid junction. Golf quality issues still not resolved.
3
Good: Impressive ride comfort. High quality feel and very refined. Huge loadspace. Versatile rear seats, 2.2 i-DTEC diesel emits just 110g/km. 95g/km chain cam 1.6 diesel from March 2012.
Bad: Not as good to drive as the previous Civic. Not as good as a Hyundai i30 or KIA cee'd on 195/65 R15s. Interior is no longer quite as unconventional as predecessor. Expensive.
4
Good: Well thought of by owners, huge boot, spacious and comfortable cabin, reasonable to drive, impressive 1.8 TSI, efficient Greenline models, facelifted in 2009.
Bad: Dull interior. Early TDI PD engines noisy. Plastic timing belt pulleys can fail early on 1.6-litre 16v engines. Suffers from VAG ABS/ESP problem. A/c and climate control problems common. Usual DSG hesitation.
5
Good: Characterful looks. Interior feels good quality. Impressive MultiAir engines are very efficient. Rides well. Strong JTDm diesels. Q2 electronic differential is very effective.
Bad: Not much rear legroom. Interior uses Fiat parts. 1750 TBi Cloverleaf a bit disappointing and thirsty. Not as good looking as 147.
6
Good: Neat looks. Optional leather makes interior 'classy'. Improved quality compared to previous Citroen models. Decent 2.0 HDi diesel. Lots of scope for personalisation.
Bad: Not as good as the smaller DS3. Kickback through the steering on bumpy roads. 18-inch wheels best avoided. Pointed rear windows don't wind down and can stab you in the face.
7
Good: Excellent combination of ride quality, steering and good handling, strong yet economical 1.4 turbo engine, frugal CDTi diesels, upmarket and neatly styled interior.
Bad: Lesser 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines less impressive, rather ordinary styling.
8
Good: Huge improvement in quality on previous C4. Comfortable and quiet on the move. Large and useful boot. Good HDi diesel engines. Neat styling.
Bad: Array of warning chimes can be annoying. Relatively crude suspension not in the same class as the Focus or Golf. EGS 'automatic' takes getting used to.
9
Good: Great to drive and superbly built. Wide choice of models, improved from 2007 with Efficient Dynamics. 118d is super economical.
Bad: Not much room in the back. No spare wheel. Firm ride on Sport and M Sport models. 116i petrol is fairly lacklustre. Coil and injector problems on later 4-cylinder petrol engines. Timing chain failures on N47 diesel engines becoming very common.
10
Good: Attractive exterior styling, stable and enjoyable handling, good level of standard equipment.
Bad: Visibility isn't great, interior isn't as dramatically different from the hatchback as the exterior
